Babies bring blessings of growth and love....
A Mother-Baby Blessing Way is a way for the mother-to-be and her close friends and family to honor and celebrate her and her transition into motherhood as a sacred rite of passage. It is a gathering centered upon the mother-to-be, giving her focused nourishing attention and support - as well as the life that she is about to bring onto this Earth. These traditions encourage us to approach pregnancy and childbirth as a sacred experience - an honor. It humbles us and connects us to our Earth and our ancestors as well as every mother who has ever birthed before us. There is no transformation on this physical plane that one can make - and survive- that is greater than the transformation of childbirth. We believe that is worthy of celebration!
What do you do at a Blessing Way?
A Blessing Way is intended to nourish, nurture, prepare, support and encourage the pregnant mother. As most Blessing Ways are created with the mothers wishes in mind, they can all be very different. Commonly they run from 3-6 hours and involve some elements you would recognize from a baby shower such as food, gifts and activities. However, these things are generally done with far more intention and focus on the mother than the baby.
Blessing Ways often include a sharing circle where guests bring a gift and some blessings for her. This is a space where the she may share her hopes, fears and dreams and receive support and encouragement as she moves toward the event of her Birth Time. Gifts are also brought for the baby and put into the mothers "nest". It is common to sing songs, dance, share poetry and words of wisdom. Often there is a beautiful alter set up to honor the ancestors which holds photos of mothers and grandmothers and beyond, this can be added to by the guests as well with photos of their ancestors, flowers, stones or anything of significance.
Usually there is a creative activity such as painting prayer flags for the Mother-Baby, creating a Blessing Way necklace or bracelet (each guest brings a bead and shares a blessing), creating labyrinths, a belly cast, henna, or making her Labor or Postpartum Tea (each guest puts in some herbs and a blessing). There are many things you can do - getting creative with it is half the fun! These activities give the mother-to-be some symbols of strength that she can take with her into her Labor Land and beyond to remind her of the support and love around her.
There are also nurturing activities such as washing her feet in an herbal bath while others give her a hand or neck massages or Reiki, or her hair can be braided to symbolize her transition from maiden to mother, for example. This helps the mother-to-be to know how to accept help and remain humble to receive.
